      Product Description

Join Mike Wood, on this amazing 13 day Highlights of Patagonia trekking adventure visiting both the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and the Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina.

This adventure has been designed with our travel partners at Chimu Adventures and has been developed based on year’s of experience in travelling in this region. We will finish our ‘Highlights of Patagonia’ in Ushuaia El Calafate so that travellers can either start the next stage of the adventure to Antarctica, or fly to Buenos Aires to spend an extra 3 nights before heading home.

Travellers can purchase either trip separately, or combine them for month long extravaganza of adventure.

(Price DOES NOT yet include flights, please advise when booking if you’d like us to book your international flights. We will book internal flights – Santiago to Porto Natales, El Calafate to Ushuaia, Ushuaia to Buenos Aires – when you deposit and charge accordingly).

The Highlights of Patagonia starts with your arrival in Santiago where we have 3 nights staying at the boutique Hotel Cumbres in the upmarket suburb of Lastarria. We will spend the 3 days exploring Santiago, visiting some of the places that make this city unique (see detailed itinerary) including a visit to the seaside city of Valparaiso and the wine region of the Casablanca Valley to taste some Chilean masterpieces.

We fly to the Patagonian gateway city of Porto Natales from where we are transferred by vehicle to the Hotel Las Torres, strategically located inside the Torres del Paine National Park. The resort has a number of guides each of whom leads a different trek every day. Each evening you just chose which trip you’d like to do the following day based on its difficulty, you could even chose a drive adventure within the Park. As a group we will decide which trek we’d like to do but here is capacity for each trekker to chose a different walk and still be guided.

After 4 nights at the Las Torres Hotel we will travel by private vehicle on a 5 hour 30 min drive to El Calafate in Argentina, this will require you to use your passport to change countries, make sure you have it close to hand. In El Calafate we will have 2 nights staying in the Xelena Hotel and Suites with stunning views over Lake Argentino. From here we will spend a day to visit the Perito Merino Glacier and walk the fabulous boardwalks that afford excellent views of glacial cliff collapses.

Next we do a 2 hour transfer to the trekking capital of El Chalten strategically sited under the soaring towers of Mt Fitzroy, Cerro Torre and many other Patagonia peaks. We will have 2 nights here to give  us time to do 2 treks, the half day Los Huemules walk and the full day challenging but spectacular  Laguna de los Tres.

Finally, we transfer back to the El Calafate to connect with our same day flight to Ushuaia. Travellers can either fly to Ushuaia to join us on the Quark Expeditions 14 day Crossing the Antarctic Circle voyage (07 – 20 Feb 25), or spend 2 nights at the ‘end of the world’ exploring he Tierra del Fuego National Park, and then return to Buenos Aires for the rest of the itinerary, or fly direct from El Calafate to Buenos Aires and use the 3 nights there.

Back on the boat, you sail toward the north face of the massive Perito Moreno Glacier. The glacier is more than two miles wide and averages 74m in height above the surface of the water of Lake Argentino. It is one of the very few glaciers in the world that continues to advance and if you are lucky you may see the glacier calving as large masses of ice break away from the glacier and collapse into the water. Here, you can disembark at a oating dock and take time to stroll the walkways before boarding the boat and returning to El Calafate.

The trail continues and you will nd yourself walking between the Blue and Green lagoon -Laguna Verde which often has ducks, so you will be able to do some bird watching too!

WED 05 FEB 2025: LAGUNA DE LOS TRES – (Private Trekking)

This is the most popular trek in El Chalten, and it is certainly one of the prettiest. It starts with a transfer to the trailhead at El Pilar, located 17km to the north of the town. We start walking in a dense forest of lengas, that protect us from the winds coming off the Continental Ice Field. Right from the start we are able to see lots of different glaciers; Marconi, Eléctrico, Cagliero and in the distance, towards Lago del Desierto, the Vespignani glacier.

The path is quite at and the climbs are gentle. We arrive at our rst viewpoint, Piedras Blancas glacier and a bit later we leave the forest and end up in a clearing where we can admire in all their splendour the peaks of “S”, Saint Exupéry, Poincenot, Fitz Roy, Mermoz and Guillaumet. We then climbed 400m in about an hour until we arrived at Laguna de los Tres. During this steep kilometer up to Laguna de los Tres, the path will be rocky and with steps, and on the way up all the time, on arriving at the highest point on the path, we are rewarded by the majestic views of Fitz Roy, the glacier de los Tres and its lagoon.

The grandeur of this location makes you feel very insignificant. From here we circle Laguna de los Tres and head towards the viewpoint of the Laguna Sucia and its glacier. After a rest and a bite to eat for lunch, we will start the descent and walk back to El Chaltén. En route we go past some varying landscape, crystal clear streams and we pass by Laguna Capri – a favourite spot for photographers. After visiting the lagoon we drop down into the valley where El Chaltén is located.

SAT 22 FEB 2025: BUENOS AIRES HD WALKING WITH A LOCAL TOUR PVT – PM

Today your guide will meet you at your hotel or a central meeting point in Recoleta and take you on a tour to see the city on foot. You will start by exploring the streets of the upscale and exclusive neighbourhood of Recoleta through a local’s eyes. Marvel at some of the classical architecture of the area while your guide points out hidden gems and must visit bars and coffee shops. Continue on through the beating heart of the city, Retiro. This suburb is home to many government buildings and you can learn more about the fascinating history of Buenos Aires, which was once one of the wealthiest and most prosperous cities in the world.

Chat with your guide over a local Patagonian Ice Cream or a coffee and then jump in a taxi (or if you are feeling adventurous take a local bus!) and head over to the bohemian barrio of San Telmo. This is the oldest neighbourhood in Buenos Aires and has a fascinating past, starting as an industrial area, becoming a settlement, then home to Jesuits and inhabited by African slaves and eventually becoming one of the most multicultural parts of the city. The areas eclectic air began attracting local artists. You will explore the San Telmo market, feasting on a tasty empanada while learning about the rich history. Wander the cobblestone streets and perhaps pop into a local antique shop or visit an artisan and learn more about their expert craftsmanship. You’ll also visit an old Conventillo and the quaint Plaza Dorrego, which hosts an authentic antiques market on certain days of the week.

End your tour with a taxi ride back to Recoleta for a demonstration and tasting of yerba mate – a traditional tea that is drunk in Argentina and other parts of South America before wandering back to your hotel. If you prefer your guide can drop you off at a speakeasy bar that is hidden inside a ower shop.

Please note: This tour does not run on Sundays. The tour will start at approximately 2pm and is roughly 4 hours. If you are staying outside of Recoleta we will arrange a transfer (at an additional cost) to the starting point and your guide will be able to help you organise a taxi at the end of the tour. The tour is mostly on foot, if you have any mobility impairments please let us know ahead of time. We recommend to combine this tour with our ‘Half Day Buenos Aires City Tour’.

** We may swap the order of these two tours around depending on guide availability. A minimum of 2 passengers are required to run this tour.
