      Product Description

      Highlights

Whether on an early morning river cruise, a trek through the jungle at dusk or a night walks in search of nocturnal creatures, the Amazon is remarkable in every light. Staying at remote lodges in the middle of the Amazon rainforest provides unequalled access to wildlife. Watch as a huge variety of animals gather around naturally-formed clay licks in search of extra nutrients. Look for sloths, howler monkeys, black caimans, jaguars and tapirs along rainforest trails

      Overview

The rainbow-coloured chaos of the macaws descending on the clay lick at Heath River is an unforgettable scene. The fifth-largest in the world, this clay lick on the Peruvian bank of the river has seen up to 260 birds on it at once.

      Heath River Lodge

Early in the morning, visit a parrot and macaw clay lick. The colourful birds gather here to eat the clay in the cliffs along the riverbanks, which neutralises the toxins in their diet. Head back down the river and take a walk along the extensive jungle trails, where you'll find huge chestnut, kapok and fig trees. Your guide will explain the medicinal use of dozens of plants and trees and keep an eye out for birds and monkeys. After lunch, hike along a trail to the vast plains of the Pampas del Heath. Return to the lodge when night falls, using headlamps to search for nocturnal creatures in the darkness. Perhaps visit a nearby clay lick after dinner in hope of seeing the largest mammal in the jungle, the Lowland tapir.

      Heath River Lodge

Today choose from a wide range of activities available. Many people choose to make a second visit to the macaw clay lick or spend more time on the trails. In the afternoon, take a canoe tour around the Cocha Platanillal, an oxbow lake that's located a short distance down the river from the lodge. Return by boat after dusk, keeping an eye out for the glowing eyes of endangered black caimans along the river's edge.

Heath River Lodge - Sandoval Lake Lodge

Leave at dawn for the return journey downstream. Mornings are the peak of wildlife activity, so keep a sharp eye on the riverbanks for families of Capybaras. If you're lucky, you may even get a rare glimpse of a jaguar or tapir. Arrive at the port of Lake Sandoval in the protected Tambopata National Reserve. Walk for 3 km along a jungle trail amidst birds and butterflies to a narrow canal lined with boats. In the afternoon, the crew will row you across to Sandoval Lake Lodge (motors are banned here) where you'll spend the night. After dinner, perhaps take a short night walk to look for nocturnal creatures.

Sandoval Lake Lodge - Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast at dawn this morning, cross the lake, keeping an eye out for awakening wildlife. Walk back to the river, where a motorised canoe will shoot you upstream to Puerto Maldonado. Your Amazon adventure comes to an end here. If you're flying out of Puerto Maldonado today, please ensure your onward flight is not booked to depart prior to 2 pm.
