      Product Description

      Highlights

Uncover the diverse wildlife and storied history of these remote islands, beginning in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires and ending in Ushuaia, the gateway to Tierra del Fuego National Park.. Customise your trip with optional activities, perhaps choosing to explore the water by kayak or rejuvenate with some onboard yoga and a massage.. Whereas most polar expeditions of this kind have a crew-to-passenger ratio of ten, fifteen or twenty to one, Intrepid expeditions on the Ocean Endeavour have an expedition crew member for every 8 passengers for a greater personal touch.. Our experienced leaders have made hundreds of polar voyages between them. They’re experts in marine biology, glaciology and Antarctic history, and they’ll share their knowledge throughout the journey during a comprehensive lecture program.

      Overview

The Falkland Islands are nothing short of remarkable, a sub-Antarctic world heaving with penguins, seals and the world’s largest black-browed albatross colony. This British territory has been long been a subject of controversy with France, Spain, Britain and Argentina all having laid claim to its beautiful rolling landscapes. Though perhaps best known for the 1982 Falklands War, the Falklands boast a fascinating naval history, a rich local culture and truly iconic wildlife and birdlife – don’t miss an opportunity to experience this remote, rewarding destination.

      Buenos Aires

Your sub-Antarctic adventure begins in Buenos Aires, Argentina’s lively capital. You can arrive at any time and independently transfer to the group hotel – accommodation is included for the night. After checking in, meet your fellow travellers and be briefed by the expedition team about the journey ahead. There’s plenty to see and do if you arrive into BA early too. Perhaps explore the neighbourhood of La Boca, pay your respects to Eva Peron at the famous Recoleta Cemetery or search through the antique markets of San Telmo. If all else fails, sample some of the steak and wine Argentina is so famous for.

      Buenos Aires – Embarkation Day

Enjoy a free morning exploring the sights of Buenos Aires, or take advantage of the time to pick up any essentials you may have left at home. In the afternoon you'll transfer to the Ocean Endeavour, your floating home for the next 10 or so days, and wave goodbye to Buenos Aires. The Ocean Endeavour will follow the Rio de la Plata then turn south down the coast towards the Falklands. Tonight, join your shipmates at dinner and drinks and get to know the other travellers who will be sharing this incredible journey with you.

      At Sea

One of the major perks of a journey aboard the Ocean Endeavour is its full health and wellness centre, which includes a gym, heated salt-water pool and saunas. Yoga classes are also available to keep you entertained and feeling fresh while at sea. Alternatively, the reading lounges are a great place to pass an afternoon at sea and learn some more about the Falklands, Antarctica and its surrounding areas.

      Falkland Islands

Welcome to the Falklands! We’ll be exploring the two main islands on Zodiac excursions and daily landings. Wildlife sightings around the Falkland Islands will likely include at least three species of penguin and two endemic bird species – Cobb’s wren and the flightless steamer duck. The expedition team will educate you on the local flora and fauna so you will know what you’re looking for and other potential landing sites include West Point Island, Saunders Island, Sea Lion Island and Bleaker Island. Though the wildlife is impressive, it's not the Falkland's only drawcard. These islands have a rich history and distinctly British culture with pubs and buildings that could've come straight from an Enid Blyton novel. Spend some time exploring Stanley, the territory's capital, which is located on the island of East Falkland. Its museum has a wealth of information concerning the 1982 Falklands War and the region's Antarctic and maritime history. The landing sites visited will depend on the ship's location and weather conditions, but for information on potential landing sites please visit: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/au/antarctica-landing-sites There’s also a chance to participate in optional kayaking adventures (at an additional cost). These trips are taken in small groups and some experience is essential. Beginners interested in kayaking should first take an introductory course prior to the voyage, which includes how to perform a wet exit. We also strongly recommend that regardless of your experience, you take part in some kayaking practice prior to the voyage to ensure that you are comfortable on the water.

      At Sea

As our explorations of the Falklands draw to a close, we cruise further south toward our final destination: Ushuaia, Argentina. This is a chance to further enjoy the onboard facilities, share photographs with fellow shipmates, or simply enjoy some rest and relaxation. The final dinner together is always a highlight, so live it up and toast what’s been an incredible journey to a unique destination.

      Ushuaia – Disembarkation Day

Say a final farewell to your fellow travellers as this adventure comes to an end in Ushuaia. The town serves as the gateway to Tierra del Fuego National Park, and both the town and park are well worth exploring if you have some time to spare. Otherwise, transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
